Hilda Jean (Back) Krueger

Hilda Jean Back Krueger, 81, passed away Monday, January 30, 2023 at Cedar Ridge Health Campus in Cynthiana.

Born October 3, 1941 in Letcher County to the late Wayne & Nola Hampton Back, she retired from Delta Sigma Pi - Professional Business Fraternity as the managing editor of their newsletter in 2002. She moved to Cynthiana shortly after and built a small house on her daughter’s farm. Hilda was an avid gardener and loved nature. She loved living on the goat farm, watching birds and all the animals. Hilda was a talented artist and could often be found working on projects. She loved to share her art with others, blessing many of her friends and family with paintings, homemade cards, quilted ornaments and the like. She cared deeply for others and would talk to anyone. Hilda volunteered throughout her life as a teacher’s aide, Girl Scout leader, crafts teacher and staff member of the women’s organization, Joy of Seasons.   

Surviving are 2 children: Jeffery Alan Back, of Pittsboro, North Carolina, and Donna Back, of Nicholas County; and a brother, James Back, of Louisville. Hilda was a loving grandmother to Nathan Back, Stephen Back, Mary McCorkle, Andrew Back, Emily Burke & Brian Back and great-grandmother to 6 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her faithful pet companions, Cocoa, Marley & Basil.

To honor her request, no public services are planned. A small private family inurnment service will be held at a later date to place her near her parents in the family cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent in her memory to the not-for-profit organization, Joy of Seasons. It is a caring and diverse community of women who pursue joy together at an annual adult camp. Hilda loved being a staff member and worked all year planning and creating for the event.
